When I was 16 years old I used to accompany my father to practise bowls at Birmingham City Police's sports ground (Tally Ho) and when they were short of a player they dragged me on the rink. I grew up going to home and away matches with my parents and sister at weekends and had a great time with the officers and other bowlers, I knew most of them. I may have been the first female to play with the Police team at Henry Wiggins Factory ground, Hereford. Their cricket team brought me out a tray of tea for putting up with the 'old men'! I joined Handsworth Wood in my early twenties and skipped the winning rink in the Ladies Benevolent Triples at Leamington in 1977. My husband Roy had joined Handsworth Wood, but when the old grass green was shut down at Erdington Court and work started on a new green he moved there so he could carry on playing competitively, thats how we met. Playing for two clubs wasn't easy so in 1978/79 I left Handsworth Wood and made Erdington my club. I enjoy going to other clubs and meeting thier players and especially enjoy our week away on Tour in July. |
